Uterus Transplants Are Now a Reality in America

The reproductive world is excited that the Cleveland Clinic will soon perform a groundbreaking surgery to transplant donor uteri into 10 different women who suffer from uterine factor infertility (UFI).

Dr. Tommaso Falcone, chair of Cleveland Clinic’s Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health Institute says “Although there appears to be potential for treating UFI with uterine transplantation, it is still considered highly experimental.”

The uteri will actually be loaner uteri, because after a woman becomes pregnant and delivers a child or two, she’ll have two options: to either give the transplanted uterus back through hysterectomy, or just by letting it wither away.

Andreas Tzakis says that unlike previous life saving organ transplants that have been carried out, uterus transplant is considered to be “life enhancing.”
